“Off the beaten track” is an expression often used to describe the pretty little hamlet of Alnham, situated in the heart of the rugged Cheviot Hills in the Northumberland National Park.

This is a place where the lover of nature and the countryside can feel truly at home,or where those wishing to escape the stresses and demands of modern life can flee and discover that rarest of emotion – peace!

Whether its open country and walking you want or a game of tennis on a warm summer's day or perhaps trying your hand at fishing ; maybe local history interests you (the village boasts a pele tower, an ancient church, remains of a roman fort, a monument high on the hill in memory of two shepherds who perished in the winter of 1962 and many stories of the Border Reiver invasions); for the nature lover we have an abundance of wildlife - foxes, badgers, red squirrels, deer and otters ; bird life too - king fishers, buzzards or even the occasional red kite;  you may want to see the workings of a traditional upland family farm or simply enjoy the tranquillity of an English country cottage, you can find them all at Alnham.

There are miles of foot paths and bridleways to enjoy reaching over the Cheviots and beyond, quiet country lanes for the cyclist and around the farm are cattle, sheep, horses and our pet pig, there is also the tennis court and fishing pond ; the local church is open daily, and sitting in the cottage garden you can keep a look out for finches, blue tits and woodpeckers ; inside both cottages are comfortable and well equipped - ideal if you just want to snuggle down in front of a log fire and relax.

It’s hard to quantify what spending even a little time in such a special place can bring. But you can be sure to take home with you a unique sense of perspective and a knowledge that no matter how crazy the modern world becomes, there still exists a place where you can truly, get away from it all.
